Holy Cross Church and the Masjid Al Sabur Community Peace Park

Since 2006 we have had a very special relationship with our neighbors, the Masjid Al Sabur Community, whose mosque is located at the North edge of our parking lot.

Nearly 100 people of all ages from both congregations gathered last Saturday afternoon, May 30 to socialize, enjoy church and Turkish music, pray, and to share a delicious meal provided and served by members of the Islam community (with Abbott’s custard provided by Fr Wheeland.) All experienced the traditional Muslim Call to Prayer and heard readings from both the Bible and Quran. The highlight of the afternoon was the reading and signing of the Peace Park Dedication by Father Wheeland and Imam Yusuf Yilmaz of the Muslim community. Each group will receive a copy to post for all to see. A permanent marker will be placed in the park itself which is at the north end of the Holy Cross parking lot and behind the mosque. Special thanks go to Joe DiVincenzo for overseeing the Holy Cross portion of the program and to Michael Valicenti for sharing his beautiful voice.

Charlotte Neighborhood Churches
The clergy of the neighboring churches in the Charlotte area meet monthly at Holy Cross Rectory. An Ecumenical Prayer Service is planned for Thanksgiving (with the site rotating yearly at the various churches) and for Easter Sunday Morning – holding a Sunrise Service at Charlotte Beach. Other Prayer Services may be planned as the need arises.

The Charlotte Neighborhood churches are the sponsors of our St. Pauley’s Clothing Collection site. The actual drop off shed is located on our parish property, but all the churches take responsibility of this ongoing mission project, which helps others.

Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf

Holy Cross is a part of the Greece Food Shelf which serves the people of Charlotte. Those in need are forwarded to the Food Shelf for help. As a member, we also take up food collections for the Food Shelf on a regular basis.

We also maintain an emergency food cupboard here at the parish. This helps to serve those that are not able to obtain food elsewere. We service about 10 to 15 families per month. People in need of food can call the parish office.

Greece Churches - Habitat for Humanity
Nine Greece churches have joined together to sponsor a Habitat home in the City of Rochester. Church members, in addition to helping fund the project, work side by side during the construction of the home, joining with other volunteers, Habitat staff, and Habitat homeowners.
